Tomorrow’s Board Meeting is at 6 p.m. at SKHS. We expect to see many SKEA members wearing red.
Since yesterday’s story problem helped give us a better understanding of the elimination of teaching positions, we are following up today with some charts to help remind us about the decline in staffing over the last few years.
These charts produced by WEA Budget Analyst Andrea Hardy and are based on numbers the district report to OSPI, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. Click the link below to view three charts. The charts will download if you are viewing this with a smart phone. You can open them in a new window if clicking on the link below doesn’t quite do the trick.
Two charts illustrate that the reduction of classroom teachers is higher than the decline in student enrollment leaving students in larger classes. The result of a reduction in staffing in excess of the decline in enrollment is that the number of students per classroom teacher has grown. This is, clearly, not the direction we want for our students.
More bargaining is scheduled for tomorrow morning but tomorrow evening is the last time we have, as a large group, to help board members fully understand the extent of the class size issue. Our General Membership Meeting is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 26 at SKHS at 4:30 p.m.
